Having a valid will in South Africa ensures your wishes regarding your assets and dependents are carried out after your death.
Here's a guide to help you get started
We are here to assist you with your Will.
Your will must be written, typed, or printed. Handwritten wills are acceptable, but typed/printed versions are recommended for clarity and easier interpretation.
Sign your will at the end, in the presence of two or more competent witnesses. These witnesses cannot benefit from your will and must sign after you.
Date your will to avoid any confusion regarding its timeframe.
Appoint an executor to administer your estate. This person carries out the terms of your will and settles your affairs. Choose someone trustworthy and capable.
Clearly identify your beneficiaries and what assets they inherit. Specify percentages, specific items, or any conditions attached to their inheritance.
If you have minor children, appoint guardians to care for them until they reach adulthood.
Outline how you want your debts and funeral expenses paid off from your estate.
You can leave specific items or amounts to individual beneficiaries. Be very clear in describing these bequests.
Specify how any remaining assets not mentioned in your will should be distributed.
Review and update your will regularly to reflect changes in your life, such as births, marriages, divorces, or changes in assets. Store your will safely in a secure location and inform your executor and close family members of its whereabouts.
